Congratulations to Eleanor – Our First University Placement Student

Eleanor started her placement with the club to support her course work in all aspects of sports management. Although she couldn’t compete her planned hours due to Covid, she worked alongside all the directors, staff and members to gain knowledge that would help her complete her final year.

We are thrilled to tell you that she attained a First Class Degree and recently applied for employment with the Commonwealth Games, where she has been appointed as ‘Assistant Sport Competition Manager for Lawn and Para Lawn Bowls’ She will be involved in running the bowls event in Birmingham 2022.

Message from Eleanor . . .

‘My job title is going to be Assistant Sport Competition Manager for Lawn & Para Lawn Bowls, so myself and my manager will be running the bowls event at Birmingham 2022.

I really cannot thank you and all of the members enough – it may have been just shy of two weeks for my placement but it really had a huge impact on me which I will be forever grateful for.

Best wishes,

Eleanor Skipp’

We wish her much success, what an amazing start to her career.

The Ramblings of . . .

During the first lockdown our Men’s Vice Captain, Mike Taylor, started writing poems as a way of passing the time and grew to become an (almost) daily Facebook post to share with his online ‘friends’, the subject matter covers social distancing, restricted travel and most importantly praise for the work undertaken by the many people who selflessly worked on in very demanding circumstances.

At his own expense Mike has had a booklet containing his first 25 poems professionally designed and printed and has so far raised a total of £300 which has been donated to two charities, JPK Project which was formed to provide opportunities for people with learning difficulties and People Matter which provides free information, advice and guidance to local jobseekers, whether or not they are currently working, Mike is a volunteer at this charity.

JPK Project is the chosen charity for the Eastbourne Open Bowls Tournament which Mike runs, the booklet is £5 and can be ordered online via the tournament website https://www.eobt.club or you can contact Mike direct on 07702 244855 or by email email hidden; JavaScript is required

All proceeds going to these two charities, JPK Project and People Matter

Well done Mike, they are a great read.

We Welcome Back ‘Memory Lane’ Dementia Group

We were really pleased to welcome back visitors from ‘Memory Lane’ Dementia  group, returning for the first time after many months away.

In addition to our volunteers we are thrilled that one of our highly qualified coaches, Denise Smith, offered her services and equipment to enable the group to play a variety of games, followed by tea and cake of course !!

Next session: To Be Confirmed subject to Covid restrictions . . .

Beatles Tribute in aid of Children With Cancer Fund – Polegate

On Saturday (7th March 2020) a local band, NOTHING IS REAL, entertained us for the 2nd year running with a fantastic evening of Beatles music. Their generosity and that of our members and friends continues to astound us as we raised £840 on the night for Children With Cancer Fund – Polegate  our Captain’s Charity of the Year. A raffle was held with 1st prize being the only ever authorised biography of the Beatles by Hunter Davies and 2nd prize was another book by the same author called The Beatles Lyrics and is the story behind their music. A big thank you to everyone involved in the evening, you know who you are.

Junior Academy

Fund raising efforts for our Junior Academy have reached an amazing £380 these monies being raised from the sale of used sets of bowls, sale of plants and marmalade at our open days and fayre’s and £145 donated by Waitrose who included our club in a token drop as part of their community matters scheme during October 2019.

This has enabled our Junior Coach, Dave Buttle, to purchase two new much needed sets of junior coaching bowls.

Congratulations to Dave and our junior players in their success this season in the Sussex County matches.

If you would like to join our Junior Academy or require more information about our junior academy please send us a message using our Contact Form.

Social Activities for People with Dementia & their Carers

We recently welcomed Members and their Carers from ‘Memory Lane’ to have their first try at bowls. We started the session by having a go at delivering the bowls, followed by scoring points using the floor target and ‘goal’. A cuppa and cake finished off a fun afternoon and we look forward to their next visit. Visits are planned for the 4th Friday in the month.

DO YOU SHOP IN WAITROSE?

The Waitrose Community Matters in-store scheme offers a share of £1000 between three local organisations. The proportion of that share is decided by store customers placing a token in a voting box after their shop.

EDIBC have been chosen by Waitrose in Old Town Eastbourne as one of the three local organisations for the month of OCTOBER so any tokens placed in our box will help us purchase smaller (junior) size bowls for our junior section.

Our club is actively trying to encourage younger players to become involved in bowls and have recently welcomed a few local scout and cub groups to have a go, bowls is a great way to stay fit, make new friends and can be played by all ages
